“Let Freedom Ring” features Black Thought and Talib Kweli. Her perfect diction and pitch add so much beauty to this story of an against all odds love. She returns to the dream world on “Fairy Tales And Castles 2.” The comforting notion that society is fine and its ills are removed powers the brief interlude before bleeding into the ballad “I Don’t Know Why, But I Do.” Piano keys and elegant strings romance each other in the background while Michele’s beautiful voice takes center stage. Poignant piano keys play the background to aggressive drums and a dirty bassline on “Number One.” Chrisette’s drive to succeed involves the kind of self-love and belief that this world can erode. She’s going to have her piece of the pie for the world to see, the way she wants it. “I’m a Star” features vacillating chimes, a low-boom drum and piano stabs. Bedtime charms and cloud-soft background vocals give a real impression of dream land magic. The album opens with “Fairy Tales And Castles” with minimalist fantasy underpinnings that emit a Judy Garland-like feel of wonder. Her latest album, Let Freedom Reign, is a declaration of independence from the whims of the music marketplace, the easy win mentality of the music business and the idea that in order to win you have to be like everyone else. While others have taken their clothes off, taken a basic content approach, or taken the fast boat to Dancelandia, Michele has drawn her line in the sand. Album DescriptionChrisette Michele is arguably the most daring, vocally talented female vocalist of her generation.

See More Your browser does not support the audio element. Chrisette, naturally, sounds outstanding throughout, as a supernaturally talented vocalist whose songs are nonetheless easily relatable to anyone going through a breakup - or, to a significantly lesser extent here, newfound love - but the album could have really used more rhythmic punch than a token throwback strutter. It's also somewhat ironic that it's less rounded the material, while mostly well-crafted, runs together as a block of slow, serious songs broken up by only a couple brief upswings in energy. Given the different strategy, and the fact that none of the producers or songwriters here had anything to do with I Am, it's a little surprising that the results are not all that different. She co-writes only three of these songs, with executive production from "Irreplaceable" writer Ne-Yo, who also gets writing credit on six songs Chuck Harmony touches several cuts, while smaller contributions come from the likes of Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Allstar, Bei Maejor, and Tim Bosky. Chrisette evidently did some of the driving, since one of the inspirations behind the album's title refers to the realization that she can benefit by allowing more input from songwriters. Consider all of this, Grammy part excepted, and it's understandable why Chrisette would be steered in a different direction. She co-wrote each one of its songs and passed on the opportunity to record "Irreplaceable," later taken on by Beyoncé and made into one of 2006's biggest singles. The album itself barely dented the Top 30 of the Billboard 200. None of its three singles reached the Top 20 of the R&B/Hip-Hop chart.
